Thrifty Old Time Ice Cream Scooper Review
The Good
Unique
This product is certainly unique – it’s something we’ve never actually seen before! That might sound a little surprising, but it’s true. This scooper picks up and dispenses small cylinders of ice cream, in a manner that we’re completely surprised by.
Easy To Use
This ice cream scooper is designed to be quite easy to use compared to traditional scoops, which are essentially shaped like a big spoon. This scoop, by comparison, is something that requires a lot less dexterity to get repeatable, appealing results. Instead, you can get cylinders very easily, without having to pick up some tricks along the way.
Simple and Long-Lasting
The mechanism to this scoop is an extremely simple one. This is reassuring in one, very simple, way: the simpler a mechanism, the less likely it is that it will break. This means that you could surely buy this scoop and then keep it in your kitchen for decades, knowing that it will definitely work every time you come to it. How handy!
The Bad
Oddly Shaped
While the shape of this utensil is quite unique and retro in a pleasant way, that isn’t necessarily a great thing in terms of usability. If you’re planning to use this scoop for a long time, your hand may start to hurt from the hard edges of steel, rather than an ergonomic handle.
Tricky To Clean
Because this device has a small mechanism within it, it can be tricky to clean if the ice cream that you’re manipulating with it becomes slightly melted and gets into the gadget. We can’t find any information on the Amazon page, but it’s likely that this utensil is hand-wash only, which could further complicate things.
Stainless Steel
While stainless steel is typically a wonderful choice for cooking utensils, it may not be in this case. The entire body of the gadget is made from metal, which will conduct heat well from your hands to the ice cream. This could make the process of scooping quite tricky, especially since ice cream will melt at the point where friction is holding it in place. This could be resolved by adding a rubber or silicone handle onto the scoop, though this isn’t the case.
The Verdict
If you have trouble with using a standard ice cream scoop or simply want to mix things up, we would recommend getting this product and switching things up in your kitchen. It would be wonderful for a long day of serving ice cream at a potluck in the summer – how sweet!
If you do purchase one of these scoops, get in touch to let us know how the heat from your hand affects the scoop – we’d be really interested to know!
