Cherry Chocolate Chip Ice Cream Recipe
This wonderfully rich cherry chocolate chunk ice cream recipe is a wonderful thing to have in the freezer for those nights when nothing short of ice cream with giant mix-ins will do. We adore the fact that this recipe makes an ice cream that’s so luxurious and decadent that you feel a little guilty after a few spoonful… until you remember that you made it to be eaten.
To boost this ice cream, you could opt to add two teaspoons of almond extract to the ice cream batter. This will result in a flavor quite similar to an English dessert called a Bakewell tart – a pie layered with cherry jam and marzipan. The final ice cream is sure to be incredibly tasty!

2 cups heavy cream
¾ cup whole milk
1 cup sugar
1 tsp vanilla extract
Pinch of salt
1 ¼ cups pitted and coarsely chopped cherries
1 cup coarsely chopped dark chocolate (roughly six ounces of chocolate)
Method
Add the cream, milk, sugar, and salt into a small, heavy-bottomed saucepan. The reason we recommend a saucepan with a heavy base is that it will hold and disperse heat well, even when it’s been removed from the heat later in the recipe.
Cook the mixture over medium heat, making sure to whisk occasionally so that the sugar dissolves. Do not allow the mixture to boil – if it does boil, then the dairy will split, and you won’t be able to make ice cream.
When you see the first wisps of steam on top of the mixture, that’s an indicator that it’s about to boil. Remove it from the heat at that point and add the cherries.
Pour the mixture into a shallow bowl or tray, and then place it into the fridge to chill thoroughly. This should take one to two hours.
Once the mixture is cold, stir the vanilla into it. Make sure to stir thoroughly so that the vanilla is properly incorporated.
Pour the entire mixture into an ice cream maker, and then process it in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions.
During the final few moments of the processing, add the chocolate. Using a rubber spatula or anything to which the sugar in the mixture won’t stick too much, transfer the ice cream to an airtight container.
Cover the container tightly, and then freeze everything until the ice cream is firm – this should take around four hours.
